What Is the House of the Rising Sun?: An Introduction to the Origins of the Classic Song

house of the rising sun song

It serves as a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is always hope for redemption. This song encourages introspection and reflection on our own lives, urging us to learn from the mistakes of others and make wiser choices. However, this meant that only Price received songwriter's royalties for the hit, a fact that has caused bitterness among the other band members ever since. Roy Acuff, an "early-day friend and apprentice" of Clarence Ashley's, learned it from him and recorded it as "Rising Sun" on November 3, 1938.

The Meaning Behind The Song: House of the Rising Sun by The Doors

The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it in 1933. As a final note, the legacy of House of the Rising Sun lies in its ability to transcend time and connect with audiences on a deep emotional level. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless nature of music and its power to evoke emotions and tell compelling stories. While House of the Rising Sun primarily focuses on personal struggles and moral dilemmas, it can be interpreted as a commentary on the destructive nature of vice and the consequences it has on individuals and society as a whole. The song serves as a cautionary tale, exploring the consequences of making sinful choices.

Notable covers

The country sweetheart opines about the demands of touring and talks about writing songs with her famous father. A top New York studio musician, Ralph played guitar on many '60s hits, including "Lightnin' Strikes," "A Lover's Concerto" and "I Am A Rock." "Doo Wop (That Thing)" by Lauryn Hill was the only US #1 hit of the '90s entirely written, produced and performed by a female singer. Famous Yugoslav singer Miodrag "Miki" Jevremović covered the song and included it in his 1964 EP "18 Žutih Ruža" (eng. "Eighteen Yellow Roses"). "House of the Rising Sun" was not included on any of the group's British albums, but it was reissued as a single twice in subsequent decades, charting both times, reaching number 25 in 1972 and number 11 in 1982. Personally, “The House of the Rising Sun” has provided me solace during difficult times.

Great Recordings

The enduring popularity of “House of the Rising Sun” is a testament to its timeless appeal. This folk song has resonated with audiences for centuries, captivating new generations through its haunting melody and powerful storytelling. He learned this arrangement from Dave Van Ronk, a friend and mentor, who had re-worked the song from a recording by musicologist Hally Wood.

The repetition of these words reinforces the cyclical nature of life, suggesting that the house itself symbolizes a continuous, inescapable cycle of ruin for those who find themselves trapped within its walls. Many have sung “House of the Rising Sun” before Eric Burdon took it on with the Animals, and many will sing it in the future. Its psychological insight and philosophical meaning are all too relevant for this song to be anything but timeless.

But it’s hard to imagine that anybody will ever again inhabit that doomed soul at the epicenter of the tale quite as well. There are also further unconfirmed implications of “The Rising Sun” being related to other folk songs, one of which, is the folk song “Matty Groves”. The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s, but probably has its roots in traditional English folk song.

The Animals, from the English coal town of Newcastle, changed the gender in the lyrics, and keyboardist Alan Price created the new arrangement. Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. If the music sounded almost supernatural, Burdon’s vocal gave the song its terrestrial heart, one rent in two by the loaded dice and lost bets. He tempers his performance, starting off low and with deadly serious intent to grab your attention.

It speaks of a place of ill repute, a den of iniquity where the protagonist’s life takes a turn for the worse. The House of the Rising Sun serves as a metaphor for a place of temptation and moral corruption. So, the next time you find yourself drawn to a melancholic melody or a song that stirs something deep within your soul, remember to listen closely to the lyrics and uncover the meaning behind the music.

Colombian band Los Speakers covered the song under the title "La Casa del Sol Naciente", in their 1965 album of the same name. In 2014, Five Finger Death Punch released a cover version for their album The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2.

Regardless of its exact meaning, the song’s universal themes of regret, redemption, and the consequences of one’s actions resonate with listeners of all generations. On a further note, Alan Lomax, along with his father, curated the Archive of American Folk Songs for the Library of Congress. As part of their job, they worked on the field and were able to record a number of performances of the legendary song. This was the ancestor of hundreds of covers that were later on released by numerous performers, included Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and of the course The Animals, who first helped the song become a worldwide hit.

Burdon brought it into the Animals, who electrified the song for their 1964 self-titled debut album. Hilton Valentine played the stoic arpeggiated guitar part that foundations the song, while Alan Price tore into the organ solo as if trying to free every tortured soul trapped in this sinister place. “House of the Rising Sun” continues to resonate with listeners today due to its powerful storytelling and universal themes. Its exploration of temptation, regret, and the consequences of one’s choices reiterates the timeless nature of human experiences, ensuring its relevance for generations to come.

Parton has occasionally performed the song live, including on her 1987–88 television show, in an episode taped in New Orleans. The song became a hit in the '60s and continues to be recognizable even to casual music fans to this day. "The House of the Rising Sun" has been covered many times since The Animals' version by artists including Frijid Pink, Five Finger Death Punch, and notably, Dolly Parton. In this version, Parton sings from the perspective of a woman who works as a sex worker at the house of the rising sun and cautions other women about following in her footsteps. Parton's version reached No. 14 on the Country charts and crossed over to the Pop Charts, landing at No. 77 on the Hot 100 and No. 33 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Musicologists say that it is certainly based on the broadside ballad tradition; a type of ballad which differentiated from traditional ones. They were popular between the 16th and the 19th century and unlike the traditional ballads, which were more epic in nature, they spoke of love, religion, legends, and wonders, and some were even drinking songs. The ‘broadsheet’ contained the lyrics of the song, along with the name of some popular tune that would match with the lyrics. Yes, “House of the Rising Sun” has been translated into various languages, allowing it to reach a global audience. The song’s universal themes and captivating melody have made it a favorite for musicians and listeners around the world. His heartfelt and soulful interpretation of “House of the Rising Sun” cemented the song’s place in American music history.

The song is also credited to Ronnie Gilbert on an album by the Weavers released in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Pete Seeger released a version on Folkways Records in 1958, which was re-released by Smithsonian Folkways in 2009.[16] Andy Griffith recorded the song on his 1959 album Andy Griffith Shouts the Blues and Old Timey Songs. Undoubtedly, “The House of the Rising Sun” is one of the most famous songs ever created. It became popular thanks to the British rock band, The Animals, but before that happened, there is a huge story-line to be tackled.

In 2014, Five Finger Death Punch released a cover version for their album The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2. Five Finger Death Punch's remake reached number 7 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. "House of the Rising Sun" was not included on any of the group's British albums, but it was reissued as a single twice in subsequent decades, charting both times, reaching number 25 in 1972 and number 11 in 1982.

More Songfacts:

It was likely the railroads, theorizes Anthony, that would enable some anonymous soul to carry the song from the mountains in the east all the way to the plains in the midwest. Ted Anthony wrote a definitive book on Rising Sun called Chasing the Rising Sun. In it, his journey in search of the true birth of the song take him to a dozen states and even across the Atlantic ocean. The book expertly discusses Rising Sun as a part of the greater story of the spread of folk music at large. Anthony presents several ways songs tended to move across the confining borders of small towns where many of the folk singers, both recorded or otherwise, lived their entire lives and died. Anthony asserts that Clarence Ashley actually traveled the Appalachia area in the 1920s with medicine shows.

Eric Burdon and the Animals, who popularized the song worldwide when they recorded and released it in 1964, didn’t know. A lot of people have sung the song over the years, and there will be a lot that still will sing it. The message in “House of the Rising Sun“ still has relevance today, which is why it is called a timeless song. However, I doubt anyone will ever come close to Eric Burdon’s rendition, which creates the feeling of the tortured soul the song is about.

The song is often heard in the soundtracks of popular TV shows (The West Wing and Supernatural) and movies (Suicide Squad). In late 1961, Bob Dylan recorded the song for his debut album, released in March 1962. That release had no songwriting credit, but the liner notes indicate that Dylan learned this version of the song from Dave Van Ronk. In an interview for the documentary No Direction Home, Van Ronk said that he was intending to record the song and that Dylan copied his version. Van Ronk recorded it soon thereafter for the album Just Dave Van Ronk.

The Parton version makes it quite blunt, with a few new lyric lines that were written by Parton. Parton's remake reached number 14 on the US country singles chart and crossed over to the pop charts, where it reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100; it also reached number 30 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Parton has occasionally performed the song live, including on her 1987–88 television show, in an episode taped in New Orleans. Believe it or not, the melody is a traditional English ballad, but the song became popular as an African-American folk song.

Burdon then lets rip with all the emotion and anguish he can muster for that last verse as he pummels our senses. The song then tapers off to a gentle ending, with Alan Price again taking the lead. One of the original versions reverses the genders and is about a woman who has no option but to return to that sort of life. One thing for certain is that the original version of “House of the Rising Sun” had nothing to do with New Orleans. The first people to sing it had probably never even heard of New Orleans. So, the next time you find yourself drawn to a melancholic melody or a song that stirs something deep within your soul, remember to listen closely to the lyrics and uncover the meaning behind the music.

The repetition of these words reinforces the cyclical nature of life, suggesting that the house itself symbolizes a continuous, inescapable cycle of ruin for those who find themselves trapped within its walls. I had learned it sometime in the 1950s, from a recording by Hally Wood, the Texas singer and collector, who had got it from an Alan Lomax field recording by a Kentucky woman named Georgia Turner. I put a different spin on it by altering the chords and using a bass line that descended in half steps—a common enough progression in jazz, but unusual among folksingers. By the early 1960s, the song had become one of my signature pieces, and I could hardly get off the stage without doing it. Yes, there are several live recordings of The Doors performing House of the Rising Sun.

It is interesting how Burdon didn’t perform the song for a long time after the Animals split, calling it an “embarrassment”. He has since made peace with it, however, and has revisited it on various occasions in different styles. Matt Marshall is the original publisher of American Blues Scene and owns Bluescentric.com the shop for Blues, Soul, and Rock n Roll -- authentic music t-shirts where every sale pays artist's estates directly. One foot is on the platform and the other on on the train,I’m going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain. There is a house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun,It’s been the ruin of many poor girl, and me, O God, for one. This is a song that is instantly recognized by those first seven or eight guitar notes.

While there is no specific true story behind the song, House of the Rising Sun draws inspiration from the themes and experiences common in the world of addiction, regret, and lost opportunities. It speaks to the universal human experience of being drawn into a life of vice and the subsequent consequences that follow. But he still goes and knows that the temptations of the place are like a ball and chain that he is condemned to carry. However, it seems more likely it is a metaphor for his addictions to drinking and gambling.

It was first recorded in the 1920s, followed by a number of other artists including Leadbelly, Josh White and later Nina Simone. The Doors’ rendition of House of the Rising Sun showcases the band’s unique sound and their ability to infuse their own emotions into a timeless folk song. The combination of Jim Morrison’s powerful vocals, Ray Manzarek’s haunting organ, and the band’s signature psychedelic sound creates a mesmerizing experience for the listener. House of the Rising Sun is a timeless classic, and one of the most iconic songs in the history of rock music.

Grandfather Enoch was married at the time of the American Civil war, which places the timeframe we are looking at in context. "Dirty Work" is one of the few Steely Dan songs not sung by Donald Fagen.

house of the rising sun

It delves into the dark side of human nature, exploring themes of addiction, betrayal, and lost innocence. The lyrics evoke a sense of sadness and introspection, urging the listener to reflect on their own choices and actions. Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan played “House of the Rising Sun” in coffeehouses. Burdon himself picked the song up from the English folk scene, and the Animals first covered the slow, sinister tune when they opened for Chuck Berry because they knew they “couldn’t outrock” the guitar great. It is a great song for them to perform, but it wasn’t the only one that raised the roof. There were only two singers that could do that and make it work so well.

There have been tales of a picture of a women’s prison outside of New Orleans with a stone etching of a rising sun over the gate, though no images have surfaced to date. The theory is plausible, since most versions before the 60s made the narrator a woman, and many renditions include the phrase “ball and chain”. A house on Esplanade Ave, just beside the French Quarter in the Treme neighborhood has, at times, been referenced as being “the” Rising Sun, as have several other places in the area. In all actuality, the term “Rising Sun” was and continues to be (no doubt fueled, in part, by the song’s staying power and popularity, bringing it full-circle,) a common phrase.

As a popular folk song, the oldest record of “House of the Rising Sun” in reference to a song was 1905, and it was first recorded in 1933 by an Appalachian group. Other early recordings include Woody Guthrie’s version from 1941 and Bob Dylan in 1961. The version by the Animals, however, is by far the most popular, and Dylan is often annoyed when it is assumed that he covered that song from them. The Animals' version of the American folk song is considered one of the 20th century’s British pop classics. While the original version was sung in the character of a woman led into a life of degradation, the Animals' version is told from the view of a young man who follows his father into alcoholism and gambling ruin. House of the Rising Sun played a significant role in establishing The Doors as one of the leading bands of their time.

The system uses FLIT (frequency line integration tracking) which homes in on precise narrowband frequencies of sound and, using the Doppler principle, can accurately provide firing solutions against very quiet submarines. The Mark 1 Combat Control System/All Digital Attack Center replaced the Mk 117 FCS, on which it was based. The Mk 1 CCS was built by Lockheed Martin, and gave the class the ability to fire Tomahawk missiles.[23] The CSS internal tracker model provides processing for both towed-array and spherical-array trackers. Trackers are signal followers that generate bearing, arrival angle, and frequency reports based on information received by an acoustic sensor. It incorporated the Gyro Static Navigator into the system in replacement of the DMINS of the earlier 688 class.

Biography - Horace Lawson Hunley 1823-1863

The gyrocompass was introduced in the early part of the 20th century and inertial navigation in the 1950s. The use of satellite navigation is of limited use to submarines, except at periscope depth or when surfaced. The British tested their ASDIC on HMS Antrim in 1920, and started production in 1922.

Weapons and countermeasures

The very low bandwidth of VLF is a major disadvantage, and it is not capable of transmitting real-time audio signals. When the submarines are in deep water, they have the facility of launching buoys (floating objects equipped with communication gadgets) to shallow depths to help receive VLF signals. However, a few submarines are also used for other purposes like marine research and recreation purposes; however, these submarines are comparatively small and cannot go beyond a certain depth (marine research submarines may be capable of higher depths). The external shape of the present-day submarines is a long cylindrical body in the middle and elliptical bow and stern. This is not an ideal shape from the design angle since it leads to additional fuel costs. However, the additional fuel cost incurred over the life period of a submarine is sufficiently compensated by the ease and economy of building the submarine.

Control systems

Initially, the combustion engine and the electric motor were in most cases connected to the same shaft so that both could directly drive the propeller. The combustion engine was placed at the front end of the stern section with the electric motor behind it followed by the propeller shaft. The engine was connected to the motor by a clutch and the motor in turn connected to the propeller shaft by another clutch. On 5 October 1959, Trieste departed San Diego for Guam aboard the freighter Santa Maria to participate in Project Nekton, a series of very deep dives in the Mariana Trench. The onboard systems indicated a depth of 11,521 metres (37,799 ft), although this was later revised to 10,916 metres (35,814 ft) and more accurate measurements made in 1995 have found the Challenger Deep slightly shallower, at 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).

US submarines also destroyed over 60 percent of the Japanese merchant fleet, crippling Japan's ability to supply its military forces and industrial war effort. They are loaded into the torpedo tubes which are located partially within in the pressure hull and extends up to the forward most periphery of the outer hull. We will understand the working of MBTs after we deal with the process of submerging a submarine, and submarine stability. Some designs have MBTs only at the forward and aft regions, and the rest of the pressure hull is flushed with the outer hull. The pressure hull is housed inside the outer hull, which is not pressure tight.

A strong nation wants to show its war powers like an aircraft carrier to the world so that its enemies are beware of it. The depth to which a submarine can dive is normally not published by any country. However, a large submarine powered by nuclear energy is known to operate at a depth of 800 feet (250 meters). So, ignoring displacement effects, adding weight to a submarine (without also changing the hull) can impact future growth margin anywhere from no impact at all to as much as three times the added weight. This may be trivial for submarines with adequate future growth margin but for later ships of some classes, where multiple improvements have been incorporated, the future growth margin may be so low as to preclude adding any significant weight. In this most time-consuming aspect of the submarine concept study process, weights and their centers of gravity are estimated for approximately 160 weight groups to obtain the total Al weight, similar to the lightship weight for surface ships.

submarine design

His invention (essentially the same now as it was 140 years ago), allowed the submarine make the leap from novelty to a weapon of war. Prior to the development and miniaturization of sonar sensitive enough to track a submerged submarine, attacks were exclusively restricted to ships and submarines operating near or at the surface. Targeting of unguided torpedoes was initially done by eye, but by World War II analog targeting computers began to proliferate, being able to calculate basic firing solutions.

Hull

A frame is usually affixed to the outside of the pressure hull, providing attachment for ballast and trim systems, scientific instrumentation, battery packs, syntactic flotation foam, and lighting. On the other hand, a nuclear-powered submarine has a nuclear reactor that runs a steam turbine coupled to the electric generator. The nuclear reactor does not need air; it can work on the surface of the sea and submerged undersea to generate and supply electricity. Hence, a nuclear-powered submarine can stay underwater as long as necessary. Most of the larger-size submarines are powered by nuclear energy; however, due to the high cost and higher size of nuclear reactors, small and medium-size submarines still use diesel-electric propulsion.

How to Steer a Boat: Mastering the Art of Boat Steering

The H.L. Hunley used a long spar, or arm, to hold and release an explosive charge, successfully sinking the USS Housatonic. Hunley also fell victim to the explosion, and its entire crew died on Feb. 17, 1864. Leonardo da Vinci sketched a primitive submarine around 1515, and in 1578, William Bourne drafted the first design for a submersible craft. In 1620, the first successful submarine was built by Cornelius Drebbel and tested in the Thames River, where it completed a three-hour journey.

There were 23 collisions, 7 battery gas explosions, 12 gasoline explosions, and 13 sinkings due to hull openings not being closed. HMS Affray was lost in the English Channel in 1951 due to the snort mast fracturing and USS Thresher in 1963 due to a pipe weld failure during a test dive. Many other scenarios have been proven to be probable causes of sinking, most notably a battery malfunction causing a torpedo to detonate internally, and the loss of the Russian Kursk on 12 August 2000 probably due to a torpedo explosion.

As his craft was sinking, he opened the flood valves to equalize the pressure inside the submarine so the escape hatch could be opened. Bauer had to convince two terrified seamen that this was the only means of escape. When the water was at chin level, the men were shot to the surface with a bubble of air that blew the hatch open. Bauer's simple technique was rediscovered years later and employed in modern submarines' escape compartments that operate on the same principle.

The total weight of the main and auxiliary machinery can be around 30% of the total weight of the submarine. The main machinery includes diesel generators run by diesel engines, an air conditioning plant, and a high-pressure air system. The auxiliary machinery includes an auxiliary high-pressure system, an auxiliary electric motor, etc. – Looking at transverse stability, let’s assume that the baseline ship has stability lead.If the X-ton component is installed near the keel, remove X tons of stability lead; future growth lead is unaffected. If the X-ton component is installed near the hull axis, remove X tons of future growth lead; stability lead is unaffected.

Hunley sank on several occasions, leading to the deaths of many crewmembers, including that of its namesake, Horace L. Hunley, an original investor and designer of the Confederate submarine project. The two authors of this book have been involved in the design of submarines for the Royal Navy for upwards of thirty years, and have also been involved on and off in the teaching of submarine design for much of that time. Roy Burcher runs a postgraduate design course at UCL, which is attended by students from many countries. The U.S. introduces the USS Albacore with a "tear drop" hull design to reduce underwater resistance and allow greater submerged speed and maneuverability. The French submarine fleet consisted of over 70 vessels (with some under construction) at the beginning of the war.[61] After the Fall of France, the French-German Armistice required the return of all French submarines to German-controlled ports in France.

Lithium-ion batteries and the latest Air Independent Power (AIP), particularly fuel cells, are making larger non-nuclear submarines more capable. Torpedo rooms are more versatile and can be used to launch weapons or drones at higher speeds. Another way that it will carry more weapons is because some of them will be smaller, like the Swedish lightweight torpedoes which are loaded two to a tube. Or the Very Lightweight Torpedo (VLWT) that Northrop Grumman is working on. These can be used against lower-value targets, which are currently a problem for submarines armed only with very expensive torpedoes. A driving force will be to increase the number of weapons a future submarine can carry, as well as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs, aka UUVs or simply ‘drones’).

Submarines use an inertia navigation system called accelerometers and gyroscopes. This system takes the reference of the last recorded accurate GPS position of a submarine and then traces the movements of the submarine relative to the earlier reference. However, as the last recorded GPS position becomes older, the accuracy of this system reduces. Various fuels like petrol, kerosene, and diesel were tried for the IC engine, and diesel is preferred due to its fuel efficiency and other qualities. The biggest concern for the U.S. government is the vast network of undersea cables – both civilian and military – that crisscross the oceans, connecting continents and the telecommunications firms that rely on them. The U.S. Navy alone estimates it has more than 40,000 miles of cables on the ocean floor.

The propulsions are heavier, costlier, and have less efficiency than the regular submarine propeller, but they run much quieter. In the beginning, the IC engine, the electric motor, and the propeller were on the same shaft with a clutch between them (the IC engine followed by a clutch, followed by an electric motor, followed by a clutch, followed by the propeller). Normally a submarine has two battery banks placed in water-tight compartments, and each battery has sufficient energy to support the complete survival of the submarine. The presence of hydrogen in the battery compartment can lead to explosions. The thrash produced is compacted, and there is a system to throw it onto the sea bed. The accommodation space is used for housing living and sleeping places, toilet modules, exercise and gyms, food stocks, etc., and is located in the middle of the submarine.
